I love visiting schools!
If you want an author who is enthusiastic, lively and entertaining, look no further. I will visit your school, library or community centre. I will work with children from Year One up to and including Year 13 and I’ll also work with adults. I enjoy visiting schools and I am particularly experienced at facilitating Writers’ Workshops for children with Special Needs. I have heard and read some amazing stories from children who, in their own words, ‘can’t write’.
A good Writers’ Workshop lasts for about two hours with a break half way through. It’s best if there’s an absolute maximum of 30 children in the group with support workers for those who may need scribes. I have had amazing success at getting even the most reluctant writers to write. I regularly work with children with Special Needs; Looked-After Children; Gifted and Talented and Those in the Middle. An interactive talk about my work and the life of a writer lasts for an hour with a group of about 30 children. In this time I will talk about how I structure my day and my work. I’ll talk about drafting and redrafting; sending stories to publishers and making ends meet as a writer. I will also read extracts from my stories.
For younger children, I’ll read extracts from my stories and talk to the children about their stories.
If you would like to focus on a particular novel which the children have been reading, I’ll talk about the inspiration behind the novel, research, writing and re-writing and show examples of drafts along the way. A talk like this lasts for about an hour.
